Acupuncture for chemotherapy side effects

People living with cancer have enough to worry about, so adding symptoms like nausea, vomiting and pain from chemotherapy seems like an extra slap to the face. Whether cancer patients go through chemotherapy, or surgery, they often have side effects that cause their way of life to suffer.  It could be they are fatigued, or they can’t eat, or they feel week, or any number of problems that worsen somebodies way of life. There is positive news though for patients going through these situations.Acupuncture has been shown to help patients recover from the side effects of surgery and chemotherapy.  Note that acupuncture does not treat cancer itself, and you should be weary of anybody that says otherwise, however, acupuncture does treat patients suffering with cancer.  Using it in conjunction with standard care is a great approach to regaining health and wellness quicker.

What acupuncture has been shown to do is help patients suffering with nausea, vomiting and weight loss due to chemotherapy treatments recover quicker and with less symptoms than those that undergo chemotherapy by itself.  It is not a replacement for chemotherapy, however it can greatly improve recovery and can get the patient back to normal quicker.

With surgery, there is often pain associated with it, and acupuncture has been shown in many studies to help with pain reduction.  Studies have shown that acupuncture before surgery and again after surgery can cause shorter recovery time, less pain, and less complications.

I again want to emphasise that acupuncture is not a cure for cancer, but what it does do is help people get back on their feet with less symptoms and less pain.
Acupuncture for treating cancer pain and chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting are some of the things that the World Health Organization agree can be beneficial for people to try if they are indeed suffering from cancer and chemotherapy side effects.

TMJ (TMD) and acupuncture

TMJ (TMD) or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is a common and painful problem that many people suffer through.  Although the pain is common and most people can identify when they are having this jaw pain, the cause can be more tricky to pin point as there are man possible reasons for it.TMJ is essentially a term for inflammation of the temporomandibular joint in the jaw.  This usually comes with pain, and/or dysfunction of the jaw.  Those that have suffered through this condition know how painful and annoying it is to have TMJ, and often times people don’t know that there is help for it.Going to the dentist is an option for this condition, as they may be able to use some techniques to release the tension.  Massage is also something that could be tried to cause the jaw to relax and the muscles to relax enough to relieve the pain.

Acupuncture is great for TMJ in that a needle can be inserted directly into the jaw and the muscles around the temporomandibular joint to release any spasm and pain.  This is done so by placing needles in the muscle motor points which will cause lasting relief.  The benefit of having acupuncture over a massage is that it allows the needles to reach a very deep layer and stimulate areas that may not be possible to reach otherwise.

I have personal experience with acupuncture and TMJ.  I had suffered through years of occasional bouts of TMJ which made it nearly impossible to eat food, and it was truly an aweful experience.  I tried many things with only minor success, but acupuncture was what has given me truly lasting relief.  I visited my acupuncturist for a few treatments, and I was amazed by how well it worked for me, as well as how long I have gone without having any significant bouts of TMJ.

If you or anybody you know is suffering with TMJ, have them call me and I would love to talk to them about it to see if I can help.  Or schedule an appointment to receive a free consultation in my clinic and we can discuss this or any other questions or health concerns you may have.

Be well,

Acupuncture for Headaches and Migraines

Headaches and migraines are all to common in many of our lives.  The pain associated from a headache can be anything from a dull annoyance to a crippling pain that can leave you incapacitated.  Some people are lucky enough to avoid headaches altogether, but research shows that only about 1% of people avoid getting a headache in a year.

The spontaneous and non-regular headache is something that many of us get, and we take care of it by taking aspirin or Tylenol or something along those lines, and for most of us, that gets the job done.  Now for those that get regular headaches, once a week, twice a month, or possibly more frequently, maybe its time to try a different approach.

Instead of having to deal with your headache after the fact, why not try a different approach and try to eliminate getting the headache in the first place.

Acupuncture has been shown in studies to help people not only deal with their headaches, but also in helping people prevent headaches or migraines.

The link talks about a few of those studies and how acupuncture is helpful for headache sufferers.

The key to remember is there is an alternative to just suffering through your headache, but in fact there is something you can try to prevent them all together.

When I was a child, I had a history of migraines.  I remember all to well the pain and throbbing associated, and how every sound, light and smell amplified the condition.  I can attest to the fact that acupuncture helped me not only get over my bouts of migraines, but to also prevent them as well.  I can’t tell you how long it has been since I have had a migraine, and I am thankful for that fact.

If you or anybody you know has suffered from chronic headaches or migraines, give me a call and lets discuss if I can help.  Or schedule an appointment to receive a free consultation in my clinic and we can discuss this or any other questions or health concerns you may have.

Be well,

Michael.
